Clash of the Web 2.0 Titans: Blog vs Twitter
Web 2.0 has meant blog. It started with blog. Now there is Twitter, which is like a super mini blog on crack. This is because I end up posting status on Twitter three times a day on average. For the blog this means fewer entries because I have found an alternative outlet of expression. (Jay, this one is for you). So the question is, is it all right for the blog to take a hit because of the adoption of an upstart technology like Twitter?
The benefit of Twittering is that you open a new conversation that people can listen to. I like the idea of posting status messages so often. There is a lower barrier of entry for each post due to the 140 character limit. However, none of the Twitter status are a complete thought. So while Twitter will subtract from the volume of conversation on the blog, I think it will also act as a funnel moving away possibly stupid entries from the blog to simple status updates on Twitter. Blog entries become more meaningful and more complete because now there is a distinct reason to post each blog.
So in blog vs Twitter, I think each has its own place with Twitter as a funnel for small status updates and the blog as a place for more complete content. With the adoption of both, the blog gains quality as status updates and incomplete posts are pulled out and away to Twitter.
